Why You Understand English… But Can’t Speak It (And How to Fix It)
How to get out of your own head and start speaking naturally!
You’ve studied English for years, throughout school and beyond.
You understand movies. Podcasts. Maybe even your favorite Netflix drama without subtitles (okay… mostly without subtitles).
But the moment someone asks you a question in English, your brain goes:
“…”
loading… buffering… error 404: words not found
If that sounds familiar — you’re not alone. And no, you’re not “bad at English.”
So what’s actually going on?
Here’s the truth:
Most people learn English in a way that prepares them for tests… not conversations.
You’ve probably spent years:
Memorizing vocabulary lists
Studying grammar rules you barely use
Filling in blanks on worksheets (so many blanks…)
But real life doesn’t give you time to conjugate verbs in your head.
Real life is fast. Messy. Human.
Why speaking feels so hard
Let’s break it down.
1. You’re translating in your head
You think in your language → translate to English → check grammar → panic → miss your chance to speak.
By the time you're ready, the conversation has moved on… and now you're just smiling and nodding like 🙂👍
2. You’re afraid of making mistakes
You don’t want to sound “wrong,” so you say nothing.
But here’s the ironic part:
Staying silent doesn’t protect your English — it slows it down.
3. You haven’t practiced real conversations
Reading? Yes.
Listening? Yes.
Actually speaking with another human? …not enough.
Speaking is a skill. You don’t improve it by thinking about it — you improve it by doing it.
So… what actually works?
Good news: you don’t need more textbooks.
You need:
Real conversations
A relaxed environment (no pressure, no judgment)
Natural corrections that help — not interruptions with every sentence
Basically… you need practice that feels like real life.
A better way to learn
After teaching English as a second language to 1,000+ students of my own, I wanted to create a safe space for my learners to thrive supported, comfortable with making mistakes, and unafraid of failure. That is why I founded Novelish Studios - a somewhat new, slightly different, and refreshingly original approach to language learning.
Lessons aren’t about perfection — they’re about communication and co-creation.
We talk about real things:
Your life
Your opinions
Everyday situations
You’ll make mistakes (good 👍), laugh a little, and slowly start to notice you’re speaking more naturally.
That’s when confidence starts to build.
3 simple things you can do today
You don’t have to wait to start improving:
1. Speak out loud (yes, even alone)
Talk to yourself. Describe your day. Narrate your life like you’re the main character in a movie. READ English out loud every chance you get.
2. Stop translating everything
Instead of thinking word-by-word, learn phrases that you’ll use often:
“I’m used to it.”
“That makes sense.”
“I didn’t expect that.”
This helps your brain respond faster. English sentences are a product of all of their words together in one unit - in other words, translating word by word does not convey the same meaning as the whole sentence. Plus, it’s a lot more labor-intensive to look up each word in your head!
3. Focus on communication, not perfection
If people understand you, you’re already succeeding.
Perfect grammar can come later — confidence comes first.
Ready to actually use your English?
If you’re tired of understanding everything but saying nothing, it might be time to try something different, maybe even… a little novelish.
